about the mission

gradeoneOur involvement in South Asia began in 1999 when one of our board members saw an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. When he learned that it cost only about $100 to free a family who was bound in slavery, he traveled to Nepal and purchased the freedom of 42 families. Shortly thereafter, the government of this Himalayan nation officially banned slavery, freeing over 200,000 people! The problem now is that these families have their freedom, but literally nothing else – they are in extreme poverty. Therefore, Gateway to Nepal is partnering with local leaders to do  community development for these newly freed men and women.

Currently:

  • We have currently built and are supporting two schools in Nepal and have started construction on a new school in a town called PremNagar.
  • We have provided dozens of families with livestock such as goats, pigs and water buffalo that provide a source of sustainable income for the families.
  • We are working to provide sponsorships for children that reside in orphanages that are in great need, and we have a vision to build more orphanages to care for the roughly 10,000 orphans in need of homes in the western Nepal region.
  • In January 2011 we will be building bunk beds in a Tikapur orphanage to provide 15 orphans with more living space and more comfortable beds.

Your donations help us to dig wells to irrigate the land,  purchase livestock to help make families financially independent, build orphanages and schools and support many other needs. . Your donations also provide new school supplies for the children attending our schools and go towards sponsoring teachers in the villages.
